Busy Busy

Brrrrrrrrr..... Greetings from South Korea...er...I mean, Ohio. Finally, everyone at home can now understand the nose-freezing-off cold I experienced there. Mwahahahahaha!

Poor Nike gloves, left in a bar in Incheon, S. Korea. Alllll alone

Since I'd had enough venturing out in the arctic for a lifetime, I spent the entire holiday weekend shut up in sherpa-lined pjs without a stitch of makeup (well, aside from my trip to the gym Sat. am). With all that time on my hands, I got not 1 but 2 paintings done, and started a 3rd! That's a record! Just call me the Nicholas Sparks of painting (who really should be banned from writing yet another love story certain to be doomed by cancer. Someone please make him stop!)

Here is "Son of a Beach"

20" x 30" acrylic original

And here is "Sorcerer Mickey"

And finally....

Since the gym was closed on Monday, I have to do a 3-in-a-row workout this week Tues, Wed & Thurs, which I'm actually happy about. Call me crazy, but I'm not about to run in circles 2 days in a row. No sir. So that means I get to substitute a run with the eliptical, and not feel too guilty about it. Yay!

Hope everyone is staying warm!

Larry the Lion

Meet Larry. He's a lion. I was going to name this something more regal and pretty, but noooooooo, the Turtle had to walk by while I was working and say, "How's Larry?"

Arrrrrrrrrrgh!

And that was that.

It took my 2 hours to get the left side of Larry's mane perfect. I just could not get it right! And of course, I was sketching in a white hoodie. Or should I say, previously white hoodie. Time to stock up on some Oxi-Clean...

Almost could have just left him like this!
And now, introducing Larry.......

"Larry the Lion" A 24" x 30" acrylic original

It's been awhile since I've updated you on the running. I'm still putting in two 9 milers a week, and have increased my elipticalling to twice a week, instead of just once. It all started with an innocent little invite by my sister in-law to go elipt one Saturday morning in October....and I've been going every Saturday since. I'm so easily swayed. Plus, I love being able to work out in the morning, and I get to have that worked-out feeling all day Saturday. I love it!

I'm all signed up for the Air Force Half Marathon, hopefully they'll figure it out this year so I can stop running at 13.1! And I am soooo super excited that it is now offically less than a year to go to the Disney World Half Marathon! Wahoo! 2014 Half, yippeeeeee!

The 520 Laps of Christmas

Happy New Year!

I spent a lovely week and a half with my fam in Cleveland. Which meant, drum roll please, 520 laps at the Rec Center.

I've gotten pretty spoiled by my 8-lap/mile track, so having to shrink down to an 11-lapper was a blessing and a curse. It was nice to be forced to slow down my speed, since really, there is no way to gain enough speed when you have to slow right back down again for the next turn. After calming my slight freak out and accepting that I didn't have a choice, I enjoyed the relaxed pace.

RRB joined me for a few runs as well, which is always fun. No playlist, no matter how exciting, can beat gabbing about food, politics and movies with your best running buddy! Another plus? My mom rode the bike a bunch of the times I went too! (She even chauffered me and worked out the entire time I was there my last day since my car had a flat. Now, that's love).

And the best part? Working out at the Rec means recovery dips in the hot tub. Now, that's luxury!

We're hot tub junkies

Aside from that, the time in Cleveland was great, I hated leaving. It was so nice spending time with mom (including the day after Christmas when we got snowed in), seeing friends & fam, and getting some quality Teddy time.

Now, it's back to the grind. I am finishing up this Disney painting I've been working on since before Seoul, and just started sketching out a new non-Disney painting last night.

Annnnd, my paintings will soon be available for purchase online! I am opening an Etsy account and will be listing my paintings soon. Mega millions, here I come. Ha!

I hope you all had wonderful holidays!

Teddy says Happy New Year too!

Gangnam Style

Ehhhhhhhhhhhh sexy lady!

That's right, I'm heading to South Korea. Not only that, I'm heading to the Gangnam district of Seoul..or the "Hollywood" of South Korea, as it is popularly known.

Why am I going? You mean Seoul isn't on the top of everyone's list of vacation destinations?! Well, aside from that, I am tagging along the Turtle's work trip to venture into the world of kimchi, chopsticks and..um....er....... yeah, I'm completely unprepared from this trip.

So let's have some fun. Here is the very short list of things I do know:

1. My hotel has an INDOOR RUNNING TRACK!!!!!!
---ok, list over. That's all I need to know!

of course this was the first thing I looked into

2. Young-uh day ha sheh suey simeeka?
      --Do you speak English?
---A helpful phrase I think I might find handy.

3. There is a mall under my hotel.
--That makes it easy for the Turtle to find me!

4. There is also a Coldstone Creamery under my hotel.
--While I totally plan on trying all kinds of new and different foods, I have got to see what Korean Coldstone is like! And it's good to know I have a fallback for my ice cream addiction.

I think this might be getting a visit from me or 2, or 10

5. Do not leave your chopsticks standing straight up in your rice.
--This is reserved as a tribute to a deceased member of the family. Otherwise it's insulting.

6. Don't pour your own drink at a party...and if someone pours you one, you better drink it.
--Unless its a before-a-run night. Then I don't care how insulting it is, I am not compromising my morning run for tradition!

7. Our hotel has the biggest hotel fitness center in the country.
--I had to mention this again, I am so excited about this!

Those look like the same brand eliptical I use at the gym! Score!

8. Watch where you walk.
--motorcycles, bikes and even cars can be driven on the sidewalks.

9. There are 22 million people in Seoul.
-- So, that's like Disney World during peak season, right?

This is why we go to the Parks in off season

10. Postage-sized skirts = ok, Low-cut = not so ok.
--So, a nun on top and a hooker on the bottom.

and finally....

11. Dress warm.... (well, except for the mini skirt part)
-- Highs will be in the low 40s, Lows will be in the 20s. Good grief. It's like I'm not even leaving Ohio.

Well, I am good to go, right?! Honestly, I don't even know what to picture when I think about the trip. Seoul hasn't exactly been on my radar. Oh yeah, and have I mentioned that aside from Canada, I've never left the country? Or that our flight from Atlanta to Seoul is 14.5 hours!!!

The hotel has Wi-Fi, so hopefully I'll be able to post a blog or two about running in Seoul!

7 Gyms, 1 Girl

I'm beginning to collect gym memberships like I collect running shoes!

Last Thursday, I got the boot from my special little AC-ed room at the base gym. It seems they think I don't belong in a room meant for rehabilitating active and retired military (I'm usually always rehabilitating, that should count for something!). Sad as I was to lose my free AC-ed room, I kind of knew my days there were numbered. It was inevitable that they'd notice the very non-military little girl, pedaling away to The Chew.

I may be kicked out, but I left my mark. Mwahahahaha!

But have no fear! LA Fitness just happens to have 5 of the exact same bikes (Star-Trac) that I love to use! Sunday, I dragged the Turtle with me to help negotiate a membership. I tend to tune out after about 2 minutes of technical talk about things like terms and agreements, so I thought reinforcements would help. How little did I know......

Buying a membership soon became a U.N. negotiation with a little bit of Good Cop, Bad Cop thrown in. You would have thought the Turtle was negotiating an arms deal with some European country, not whether or not we could pay in full so as not to have our credit card number on file! And when the salesman couldn't get the check scanning machine to work,  fumes came out of the Turtles ears! I was alternating between smiling apologetically to the guys and glaring warning daggers at the Turtle.  I even had to mouth "Behave!"

In the end, the Turtle talked them down $20 and now I am the proud member of LA Fitness. When I think about it, this is the 7th gym I have access to! Between 3 gyms on base, the 2 indoor tracks facilities, LA Fitness and the rec center by my mom's house, that makes 7! The Turtle texted me while I was dripping sweat all over LA Fitness's carpet yesterday (seriously, who puts carpet under gym equipment?!), asking me to remind him again why I couldn't just use the bikes at the base? I politely reminded him that I don't question why he needs a whole stable of gaming systems (this weekend he bought an original Nintendo AND a Gamecube at 1/2 Price Books). I think he got my drift.

I won't complain about this. You don't complain about that!

Note the fancy shmancy hard wood lockers

In running news, my right achille's has been stiffening up again, just like last year. When I wake up in the morning it is so stiff  I hobble down the steps til it loosens up. I read up on it and they say adding heel cushions may help, so I stuck some Dr. Scholl's in my running shoes (completely defeating the purpose of my semi-minimalist Brooks). They felt great! So hopefully it'll improve soon, though Achille's injuries usually take awhile.

I cut the back off too, ya know, just to be extra safe!

Happy Friday everyone!

Feelin' Hot Hot Hot!

Me mind on fire,  Me soul on fire, Feeling hot hot hot!

Like everyone else in the country, we were cooking last weekend! With temperatures well over what’s acceptable for faeries and reptiles, we decided to leave our AC behind and head to the Pennsylvania Oven – my family’s trailer, our summer getaway spot.

First, we stopped in Cleveland on Friday night to break up the 5 hour drive. We stayed at the Turtle’s parent’s house, crashing on mattresses in the dining room because even the bugs were evacuating the heat from the 2nd floor.  Since the Turtle’s parents were in Greece, the AC had been turned off and it was quite toasty inside.
But that didn’t stop me from wrapping up in my hoodie and a fuzzy blanket when a mosquito the size of a hummingbird landed on my leg while I was on the couch!

Now, I’m not a wussy scaredy cat of bugs (I’ve swallowed my fair share of flies on summer runs), BUT out of principal, I refused to become an all-you-can-eat buffet just because that little opportunist snuck in the house. So, I covered up all my bare skin and waited.

I'll get you, my pretty!

and waited……
and the Turtle gawked at me in disbelief as he wiped his dripping brow even though he wasn't dressed for a blizzard.
30 minutes later... WHAP! Mwahahahaha! Annnnnnnd, off came my Siberian layers!
Saturday, our hopes of Pennsylvania being any cooler were completely dashed when my mom called to say the trailer was in the triple digits when she got inside. We spent the day freezing wet washcloths and wearing icepacks around our necks. But, it was so nice to be up at the trailer and spending time with my family.
Hillbilly AC

At our favorite, The Pizza Shop

Speaking of hot, the gym reopened this week and it is now even hotter in there. Their brilliant plan of installing giant fans, turned out to be 2 jumbo ceiling fans that blow the hot air down, onto the weight room floor. Is this what my leftovers feel like in the microwave?
Not the brightest of ideas

I’ve been making very slow progress on a painting of my coworker’s house. This happens to me every summer. I just can’t get motivated to paint when I’d rather be outside! Complaints about the heat aside, I actually really hate AC if I’m not working out or sleeping. I’d rather sweat it out during the day if it means being able to have the windows open and hear the sounds of nature outside! I hate being shut up in a house during the summer…it feels no different from January like that (especially with the temps the Turtle likes to keep the house at..Brrrrr!) But, with the current cold spell (90 degrees, it’s practically fall!), I should hopefully get this done soon and have something new to show to you!

Birthday Run

I decided to celebrate my birthday yesterday by dragging myself out of bed at 6am to run 9 miles in the muggy mess. Happy birthday to me :)

But, it actually turned out to be a fantastic present when I realized I had run my fastest non-race average pace of the year! In my heat stroke haze I'd accidentally hit the 'lap' button instead of 'stop' on my Garmin when I finished, so I had to find  my pace online. Since I couldn't see what the total seconds were, I know my average pace was between 7:27-7:34. Maybe legs are like wine and just getting better with age! Hehe.

Wahoo!
This is the week the gym is closed so I planned on having the Turtle show me how to get to the other gym when he got up. That gave me a lot of time on my hands to be stinky and sweaty while I waited to get stinkier and sweatier. Since he forbids me from sitting on our furniture after I run (he has this crazy idea that our furniture will absorb my sweat and Eau de Stink. Madness! ;-) ), I banished myself to our back patio while I running-high dialed the rest of my family to share (pester) my good mood.

Don't want to lose my runner's tan!
Once the Turtle got up and we hit the road, getting to the other gym became quite an adventure. We got hit by the storms pretty hard on Friday. It seemed every turn we made, we came face to face with orange cones closing off the road or an entire tree laying across the street.

It murdered our tree
Luckily, we finally found a way on base and I was pleased to see they had all the weight machines I use.....and 1 or 2 different ones I just had to try since no one was around.

This machine...not my favorite
The rest of the birthday was pretty relaxing, and later that evening, we had a nice dinner of sushi (me) and Philly Cheese-steak pizza (Shudder. That was all the Turtle's) while we watched the Olympic Trials. I swear, when the Olympics are on I just get sucked in, I don't care what sport is on!

And the best part of all? After dropping a few subtle hints (ridiculously obvious all CAPS emails), the Turtle, his sister and my family all went in and got me an iPad! Now, my family and I can message our catty comments to eachother while we watch the Bachelorette on Monday nights! YES!!!

I wish.......

Holy crap!!!

Going to run Tuesday and Thursday this week so I can sleep in and enjoy my 4th of July!

 Happy Fourth everyone!

Mommy's Here!

My mommy came to visit!

Even though I've been living in the Twilight Zone for about a year and a half now, I still get homesick and always love when my mom comes to visit. Not only do I get a gym partner and a Dancing With the Stars buddy, but for a few days it feels like I'm home (minus my cuddly Teddy...damn this stupid No Dogs Allowed apartment rule!).
How could you say no to this face?

On Monday, I got a 9 miler in before mom came in. Monday's run had some interesting events. First, some idiot cut me off at the turn and I almost took out the fire extinguisher hanging on the wall. Normally, the people at the gym run like they drive, and never look behind them before they change lanes. But this guy did! He totally looked back saw me barreling down and decided he couldn't wait and had to get in front of me.  THEN, the Gum-Chewer, who has always had a big issue with me passing him, showed up. I saw that wild look in his eye when he turned and saw me coming and predictably, he sped up to drag out the inevitable. One of these days I swear I'm going to ask him if its worth it.

So, I did what any normal runner who'd nearly taken out a fire extinguisher would do...I decided to make his life a living hell :-) . You don't want me to pass you? YOU GOT IT! I got into predator mode and quickly matched his speed juuuuuust enough so I was breathing down his neck. I could see his sweat trickling down from exertion. Mwahahahaha! I think he learned his lesson. He gave up his charade after 3/4 of a lap.

Tuesday, mom arrived and our marathon shopping day began. We visited all the stores you can't find in Cleveland (Kroger, Meijer, Home Goods, oh my!). Which we rounded out with the requisite walk to Target (I loooove living within walking distance to the bullseye!) and then heckled Brook Burke on the DWTS Results Show (really, she serves no purpose!).

Can't take her anywhere!

Wednesday was gym time again! I dropped mom off at the stationary bike and headed upstairs for the track. Best run in weeks! My speed came back and I felt like I was back to flying! I'd been a little nervous about how I'd do running two 9 milers with only one day apart. It's the first time I've done this since the reinjury! But, the hip only gave a half-hearted protest when I first started out, and then each time I'd start out after a water break..... And I happily ignored it :-)

Thursday, mom and I rode the stationaries together. The gym was stifling and I had forgotten to switch out my fan batteries! I watched in horror as the little blades slowly crept to a stop. Despite having mom to talk to, it felt like the longest bike ride ever, and my sweat lake under the bike had turned into a small ocean. Ewwwwww.

Trying to out-wit bike solitaire

Now, it's finally the weekend! Hurray! Mom is safely back in Cleveland and I am blearily typing this blog as I wait for the clock to strike 6am so I can make my dining reservations for our next trip to Disney World! Yes, that's right.. I got up before the sun on a Saturday so I could make reservations for a dinner 6 months from now. The things you'll do to have warm, scrumptious pretzel bread and the chocolatey goodness of the 'Smores dessert at Le Cellier in Epcot. Mmmmmmm......

I just drooled on the keyboard

Next week is supposed to be warmer, so I may have to run outside. Not thrilled about that since it means running in a strong head wind half the time, and zero shade. Ah well, at least my running farmer's tan will get worked on!

The Day the Music Died

Another iPod bites the dust. What is this, 2 or 3 that I've killed now? I swear, all I did was sit down on the bike, plug in my headphones and..........nothing. Well, actually, I think I heard a tiny computery voice go "F it, I'm out!, but I could be wrong.

So what's a girl to do with 800 calories worth of biking to do with no tunes? Study the weird specimens that habitate the gym, of course! Here are some of the species and their descriptions from my day of field research:

- Tattooed Mid-Life Crisis Man - Sports a gray buzz cut, freshly inked barbed-wire bicep tattoos and has the annoying tendency of getting on his cellphone every single time he sits down on the crunch machine. Every. Single. Time.

- Male Swan - A 20-something who probably spent a lot of high school lunches sitting alone with his acne and Texas Instrument, and now spends his breakfasts, lunches, dinners and all the time in between, lifting, chugging whey protein and frantically looking to see who's checking him out....whenever he can manage to peel his eyes away from the mirror, that is.

- Exhausted Man - A disheveled middle-aged man who shuffles to the gym every day in his slippers (yes, his slippers) and rides the bike next to mine every Thursday. He leans his head back, eyes closed and hands folded as if in a prayer as he barely gets the pedals around a full 360. (still in his slippers)

- Perfume Girl - A college girl who really took the 'The gym's a great place to meet someone!' theory to heart. Matching workout outfit, full make-up and drowned in Victoria's Secret Angel Perfume, she manages to be at the gym longer than the Male Swan, while accomplishing nothing aerobic or anaerobic, as she flits around the gym, wafting her scent coquettishly in the direction of the other Male Swans.

- Rico Suave - A friendly middle-aged man who salsas in between his sets. Ole!

and my personal favorite

- Oxygen Tank Couple - A supersweet elderly couple, made up of a very nice husband who dutifully carries his wife's oxygen tank as they totter around the track. Everyone should have someone in their life willing to carry their oxygen tank around when they get old.

These are only a small sampling of the oddities that frequent my gym. What about you? Have you witnessed any strange characters at your gym?

So Inappropriate

Runner, painter, blogger and now I can add 'vixen' to my list of titles. Ok, maybe not that extreme, but yesterday some crotchety old women at the gym were muttering their displeasure of my "inappropriate" attire. At least, that's what my buddy who works at the gym told me, as he laughed hysterically. He overheard them griping to each other and just had to tell me.

"Some people just be hatin' ", he wheezed through his doubled-over laughter. See, this is why you make friends with the people who work at the gym, so they have your back when decrepit old bitties are on the attack (For the record, he and his coworker find nothing wrong with my gym clothes). This is what I get for holding the locker room door open for them.

Scandalous!

And anyway, I wouldn't dress so inappropriately if the gym wasn't so crazy hot! The base gym is in an old airplane hanger, which is like working out in a tin can. There's no AC and the sun heats it up like a baked potato. Its not uncommon to see the thermostat in the gym get to 95 in the summer, and that's on the first floor! So if those women would prefer to slip and  break their newly replaced  hips on my puddles of sweat, I suggest they settle down about my sleeveless shits :-)

Anyway, I ran a fabulous 9 miles inside yesterday, leaving a nice little trail of dirt clumps in my wake. I just couldn't seem to smack off all the mud I'd accumulated from my trail run at home on Saturday.

Thankful for friends to ruin new running shoes with!

On Black Friday, I was the only one in line for the door opening of Michael's (shocking I know!). And with my bleary-eyed mother in tow (the complimentary Godiva bars being given out perked her right up), I cleared out the canvas aisle and hit a few more stores since we were out (who can say no to discounted Kermit pajama pants!?)

Where is everyone?!

I'm working on a painting of Animal playing the drums for a friend, and then I have a long-overdue housewarming gift for my brother & sister in-law to paint. Oh yeah, and the Disney World Half Marathon  is only 37 days away! Yippee!

Things That Go Bump in the Night (And Day)

I am a fraidy cat. When I lived with my mom, if she went away on a trip with the dog, I would either sleep on my brother's couch or I would pull my car into the driveway, drag out my pillow and sleeping bag and sleep in the backseat rather than spend the night alone in my house. I was more afraid of ghosts and Michael Myers than actual people. Robbers and rapists are nothing compared to the supernatural, in my mind!

Car, bedroom, lunchroom..Dante has done it all

Yesterday afternoon, I came home to do my crunches before heading to run at the gym. I was in the middle of a set when I heard a shuffling/falling noise upstairs. I paused The Final Days of WWII on History Channel and froze. No more sound. Ok, I thought, it was probably just my pants falling off the bathroom counter or some clothes falling in the closet. I wasn't happy, but dammit, I had crunches to do! So, I grabbed my cell and plopped it next to me on the floor and continued crunching.

Crunching on a noise-less day
When I got back from the gym, I went upstairs sure I would find my pants on the floor. But they were still on the counter where I'd flung them! I inspected the rest of the upstairs and found nothing amiss. Hmmm...

Last night, my newly MBA-ed husband decided to celebrate with a friend at trivia night at the Fox & Hound, and as I was already pj-ed and squirreled under a blanket watching E! News with a Skinny Cow (Yum!), I stayed put. An hour later, I heard the noise again! Only this time it was a bit louder and longer.

My wonderful Sam's Club blanket in quieter times

As soon as I heard it, I immediately kicked off  my slippers, grabbed my key and ran out the door. Oh the benefits of having your sister in-law living next door! I charged into her place, clutching my house slippers, and planted myself on her couch under her Sam's blanket (you really ought to get one, they're amazing).

I have no idea what's making the noise. We checked out the upstairs again when he came home and again found nothing. I wish I knew what it was...or maybe I don't want to know. Ok, let me rephrase, I wish it would stop!

In other news, I ran 6 miles on Monday (PT Testing interrupted my run, otherwise I would have done all 9) and much to my delight, I had an awesome 9 mile run yesterday! I don't think I lost any speed in these past 2 weeks either, because I passed a few runners I know run my pace. Yay! The hip isn't perfect, but nothing like it was on Halloween, and the pain fades away as I run.

Sold!

I am so beyond excited! I sold my first painting! Visions of gallery signings and art paparrazi (are there such things? there should be!) have been dancing in my head. I sent the giraffes on their merry way to North Carolina yesterday and now, dun dun dun....this means a third giraffe painting is in my future. I had no idea giraffes were so popular!

Maybe I'll paint him next

I'm still toiling away on the landscape cabin picture for the girl at work. I love trees now! I've swapped my hatred for trees to hatred for cabins. Trees are just fabulous now that I'm really good at them! I'll show you guys my work on the painting when its completely done. Hopefully, by this weekend, but that will depend on my sanity.

I had an awesome weekend. I ran 9 miles with Frank at the rec. It might have been 10 since I had to count on my fingers. The rec no longer lets you borrow lap counters, but they are available for $10 at the front desk (a string of obscenties followed learning this news). We followed up our rat circles with a nice long dip in the hot tub. Ahhhhhhh...

Saturday night, Tony Stark and his doll went to a Halloween party (party shmarty, I just wanted to do the makeup!) And Sunday, after some wedding dress hi-jinx (I couldn't resist) we made the long trek back to Dayton, stopping in Akron to drop off my 2 paintings for the auction.

And they say you'll never wear it again

The base is practicing security drills all this week, which makes going to the gym tricky. Will the gate be open or won't it? My Type A schedule does not appreciate this disruption. It took me the entire 30 min drive home from work on Monday to reset my brain from bike mode to 9 mile outdoor run mode. I ran my 9 on Monday, 7:46/mi avg pace. I think I might be coming to terms with my new regular pace of 7:35 - 7:50/mi average. Gone are the 7:20/mi runs of my single days. And right now, I think I'm ok with that. I just want to  be able to run (and now my actual hip hurts!). And sub 8s aren't too shabby.

Anyone else having a disgustingly injury-filled year?

The Madness Continues...

I know its not a full moon, so what's come over me? I have had crazy bursts of inspiration this week! First, I painted the 'Hawaiian Night' painting in 2 hours on Monday, and then Wednesday I completed yet another painting!

And if that wasn't enough, I ran 10 miles yesterday! Yes, 10 miles. Because I didn't take a lap counter with me on the track and counted laps on my fingers...to make sure I got miscount, I did an extra mile. (Am I absolutely sure I did lap 64?) Have to be safe, you know!

The run felt pretty good, only a little sore on my upper thigh today. I tried to take it slower, but I couldn't resist whipping by the Air Force guys doing their PT time.

So, I finished this painting that I'm really excited about. I think I finally found my "thing": silhouettes contrasting with bright, colorful backgrounds.

Getting some love from my giraffes
This time I sketched my silhouettes on paper and cut them out to trace on the canvas first, to avoid the paint covering them up on the canvas like last time.

And after stressing all day about how I was going to make that tree......

Savannah Nights

That's it for the auction. I already have a ton of ideas for other paintings I'm going to do to add to my collection to one day sell/show.

Don't forget, if you're interested in this or the 'Hawaiian Night' painting, or just want to help out with a good cause, the Bring Eli Home Auction is Nov. 5th, in Akron.
